Establishing Faith (Phase IA-IB)
At the
beginning of the Establishing Faith phase ("Cultivating Interest" Phase
I-A) a person is not yet a believer and needs to hear the Good News
about Jesus Christ in a culturally relevant manner. As God the Holy
Spirit works through the Gospel and the means of grace, the new birth
occurs as the person repents and confesses his sin, and places his
faith in God.
- NOTE: At this time, WDA does not offer evangelism resources for Phase IA. However, the following material (especially Who is God?)
can be adapted and effectively used as an evangelistic resource. Our
Equipping for Ministry (Phase III) materials contain evangelism
training resources, but we suggest finding approaches that are
culturally-specific and most relevant to each ministry.
After the
new birth, the disciple needs to grow spiritually, know God personally,
and learn the foundational truths and practices of the Christian life.
(This happens during "Providing Follow-Up" Phase I-B) WDA offers two
primary resources designed to help a church or other ministry develop a
progressive disciple building strategy for these new believers:
- Who is God?
focuses on some of God's attributes that relate directly to salvation
(His holiness, justice, righteousness, wrath, love, mercy and grace).
This material also underscores the importance of repentance and faith
as our response to the Gospel and looks at the biblical doctrines that
provide an assurance of salvation.
- Getting Started introduces
a new believer to several of the foundational truths of the Christian
life: The Word of God, Prayer, Fellowship, Worship and Baptism. In
addition, the concepts of being filled with the Holy Spirit and walking
in the Spirit are explored.
Each of these resources
consist of 5 Question/Answer sessions that can be used in a one-one
setting or with a small group. Each study also includes detailed
Leader's Instructions to help keep preparation to a minimum. In
addition to the Question/Answer materials, there are 5 Pocket Principles that can be distributed and then discussed with a mentor, and 5 parallel Teaching Outlines that can be taught as messages.
Laying Foundations (Phase II)
At this Phase a disciple has become a Christian, completed basic
follow-up and begins the process of getting to know God intimately
and learning to walk with Him in daily obedience. The disciple also
begins to build relationships with other believers.
This material has been designed to help a church or
other ministry develop a progressive disciple building strategy
for young believers. It should be utilized after evangelism and
basic follow-up have been completed (Phase I), but prior to any
formal equipping for ministry (Phase III).
The material has been organized around the three primary
disciple building themes of Laying Foundations (Phase II): Knowing God, Understanding
People and Growing Spiritually. Download a sample pack or download individual
samples below.
There are four types of materials in this Phase:
- A set of 30 Small Group Studies (for both a disciple
and a leader)
Facilitates discussion of the biblical themes of Phase II in a
community setting. Download a sample.
- 31 Teaching Outlines
Provides a classroom teacher with outlines that facilitates the
communication of the primary theological content of this phase.
Download a sample.
- 31 Pocket Principles
Contains the same theology as the Teaching Outlines, in a full text
version, for a mentor to use as supplements with a disciple, or
for a teacher to use as handouts in a class. Download a sample.
- A year-long set of Devotions
Helps the disciple establish the discipline of a Quiet Time and

Equipping for Ministry (Phase III) At
the Equipping for Ministry Phase (III) a disciple has a strong personal
relationship with God and has matured to the point that he is ready to
begin having a ministry in the life of another person. He is ready to
learn how to share his testimony and the Gospel as well as how to deal
with the questions non-believers often ask. His new venture into
ministry will cause him to consider issues such as time management,
ministry priorities and spiritual warfare. As he continues to
grow, he will learn more about the important doctrines that grow out of
his position in Christ, and come to understand more about healthy
relationships. The material in Phase III has been designed to
help a church (or other ministry) develop a progressive disciple
building strategy for the ministry trainee.
Equipping for Ministry (Phase III) materials are organized around these disciple building themes: evangelism
(including follow-up of new believers), beginning apologetics
(answering questions from non-believers), spiritual warfare, healthy
relationships, ministry principles, time management, positional truth
and inductive Bible study. Download a sample pack or download individual samples below.

community setting. Discussions based on content of Pocket
Principles. Download a sample.

A strategic approach to integrating activities and
content is important to effective disciple building. Learn
how to use WDA materials.
“I’m
excited about your new materials. They are really clear and
well-written. The most exciting thing is: now that we have these
materials, discipleship doesn’t seem so scary! The discipling
process I began with the women in West Africa is being continued
by them while I am home on furlough. They are using the materials!
They are transferable.”
